Given the rolling release nature of Arch Linux and historical boot breakages during updates... Switch base distribution used for this project.

New distro: Ubuntu LTS (aarch64)

Other options (not chosen or viable)

  • Alpine Linux
    • Has terrible setup docs
    • Can be deployed via chroot but decyphering of existing scripts is necessary
    • Broken first boot upon figuring out how to install + boot base install
  • Raspbian / Raspberry Pi OS
    • Slowest updates between LTS versions
    • Includes a LOT of unnecessary cruft that is problematic for an environment that strives to be as minimal as possible
    • As of 2020/08/01 it's a FULL Debian release behind
  • Debian
    • Not focused as closely on support
    • Lags for supporting new Raspberry Pi models
    • Support lag for boards is worse than Ubuntu
